Every year, Miami International University evaluates a restricted number of candidates in order to grant a Honoris Causa degree.
The award shall be in recognition of a distinguished career involving exceptional achievement and eminence, of a standard commensurate with that required for a higher doctorate of the University, and outstanding service to the community beyond the level normally expected in the execution of the personal duties.
A proposal for the award of the honorary degree shall be made in writing to the Academic Senate and shall include the full name and address of the person nominated for the award, the degree which it is proposed should be awarded and a detailed statement of the reasons why the award should be made which addresses the Criteria for the Award of Honorary Degrees as approved by the Senate from time to time.
All deliberations, investigations and recommendations relating to the nomination shall be treated as strictly confidential by all persons concerned therewith. If the Academic Senate reports that the proposed award is justified, the President will issue the honorary degree under the seal of the University.
The conferral of the Honoris Causa degree shall entitle the person on whom it is conferred the right to wear the academic dress of the particular degree.
